What is an Infected Insect Bite?

Most insect bites and stings are harmless and heal within a few days. However, in some cases, they can become infected or trigger allergic reactions. Rarely, bites from mosquitoes, ticks, or mites can cause illnesses like:

  • Malaria (mosquitoes – in high-risk countries)
  • Scabies (mites)
  • Lyme disease (ticks)

Symptoms of Infected Insect Bites

  • Pain or tenderness at the bite or sting site
  • Red, raised, or swollen lump on the skin
  • Multiple bites clustered together
  • Worsening redness, pain, or swelling (signs of infection)
  • Possible mild allergic reactions at the site

On black or brown skin, redness may not be visible, but swelling or a lump can usually be felt.
