What is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

UTIs are bacterial infections affecting the bladder (cystitis), urethra (urethritis), or kidneys. Most uncomplicated UTIs can be treated with antibiotics following a pharmacist’s assessment.

Common Symptoms of UTIs

  • Burning or stinging sensation when urinating (dysuria)
  • Increased or urgent need to urinate
  • Waking up at night to urinate (nocturia)
  • Blood in the urine
  • Lower abdominal or back pain
  • Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine
  • Fever or chills
  • Feeling unwell or fatigued

In some cases, dehydration can also affect urine colour and smell.

This service is available to non-pregnant women aged 16 to 64 with symptoms of uncomplicated UTI. Our pharmacist will assess your condition and determine whether treatment under the NHS Pharmacy First Service is appropriate.
